First Grade Expectations

First Grade will be an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning. This will be a year of important transitions, as well as one in which the acquisition of new skills is accelerated. In first grade, students will learn to read independently, write stories, add, subtract, problem solve, conduct research, complete projects, and do so much more. Much emphasis will be placed on students becoming independent learners and thinkers. The school day will be a busy one in the life of a first grader. Throughout the day, our students will constantly expand their depth of knowledge by working on learning tasks and activities aligned to the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards. The subjects taught in first grade will include phonics, spelling, reading, grammar, writing, science, and social studies. We expect for every child to progress at his or her own rate, either acquiring adequate skill knowledge or exceeding the content standards. We realize that in order for learning to take place, the classroom environment must be conducive to learning; therefore, we will expect all students to behave in an acceptable manner. Motivating our students to learn, maintaining each child’s self-esteem, and building a secure foundation for future growth will always remain a priority in first grade. First grade teachers will endeavor to work in partnership with all parents to ensure that our first grade students develop a love for learning that will last a lifetime.
